Laminar flow refers to the smooth, uniform, and unidirectional movement of air or fluid along parallel flow lines. In the context of cleanrooms and laboratories, laminar flow systems are used to create controlled environments with minimized contamination risks

Here are the key features and components of laminar flow systems:

  • Unidirectional Airflow: Laminar flow systems utilize high-efficiency filters, typically High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, to filter incoming air and direct it in a uniform, straight, and parallel manner. The filtered air moves at a constant velocity along the entire work area or cleanroom, without turbulence or eddies.
  • Horizontal or Vertical Flow: Laminar flow can be achieved in two main configurations: horizontal flow and vertical flow. Horizontal laminar flow systems direct the filtered air horizontally across the work surface, providing a clean environment for activities performed on the table. Vertical laminar flow systems, also known as clean benches or clean benches, direct the filtered air from the top of the workspace downwards, creating a sterile zone for work performed within the cabinet.
  • HEPA Filtration: Laminar flow systems incorporate HEPA filters to remove particulate matter from the air. HEPA filters have a high efficiency in capturing particles as small as 0.3 microns with a high level of effectiveness, reducing airborne contaminants and providing a clean environment for sensitive operations.

Cleanrooms are categorized into different ISO classes, such as ISO 5, ISO 6, ISO 7, or ISO 8, depending on the maximum allowable particle count per cubic meter of air. Laminar flow systems contribute to achieving the required cleanliness levels in cleanrooms.
  • Sterile Environments: Laminar flow systems create sterile or controlled environments suitable for various applications, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical device assembly, electronics manufacturing, and laboratory work. These systems help prevent contamination by minimizing the introduction of particles or microorganisms into the workspace.

This includes regular filter replacement, airflow velocity monitoring, and periodic validation to verify that the system is operating within the specified parameters.
